The Slate Digital VMS ML-1A is a large-diaphragm, cardioid condenser microphone designed specifically for use with the Virtual Microphone System (VMS). VMS is a hybrid system that combines the extremely transparent ML-1A microphone with the state-of-the-art VMS modeling plug-in to deliver the sonic palette of a world-class microphone locker to recording enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Through the power of digital modeling, users can instantly switch between the sonic characteristics of legendary tube microphones, vintage dynamic mics, modern condensers, and even classic preamps—all within the software. This flexibility not only streamlines the recording process, but also enables engineers and artists to audition different mic sounds in real time. Even more impressively, microphone models can be changed after tracking, offering unparalleled control and creative freedom during the mixing stage.

Virtual Microphone System – latency-free processing

With the accompanying software, the ML-1 microphone allows you to tap into the sound of a huge range of classic microphone styles, ranging from legendary vintage mics to modern-day classics with the simple click of a mouse. Using the VMS software alongside a low-latency interface allows you to eliminate latency when recording; allowing you to hear yourself using any of the mic models in real-time. The ML-1 comes complete with eight mic models (see below for full list), but they also offer a range of additional microphone models which can be purchased via expansion packs (sold separately) to expand your tonal options.

Advanced sound shaping – complete with powerful analog preamp plugins

The ML-1 comes equipped with two remarkable emulated analog preamp plugins, FG-73 and FG-76, designed to elevate your tone-shaping capabilities. The FG-73 preamp is inspired by one of the most renowned discrete solid-state preamps in the world, known for its bold, warm, and present sound that has graced countless recordings. This preamp delivers stunning results, adding depth and richness to your audio tracks.

On the other hand, the FG-76 preamp is modeled after a vintage German tube pre that has been featured on hundreds of classic albums. This preamp infuses your tracks with an abundance of energy, providing a thick, colourful tone and tasteful low-end saturation that enhances the performance of kicks and bass lines.
